As you prepare for a Seder service at home, gather the following items for the table (if possible):

--Tablecloth for the table

--Cloth napkins for all participants

--Large bowl with water in it (for people to ceremonially wash their hands during the meal)

--Hand towel

--One small cup or bowl filled with salt water

--One plate for each person

--One water cup for each person

--One wine glass (adult) or fancy juice cup (child)

--At least one candle and lighter or matches

--An empty chair

--An extra wine glass

--Wine, enough so each person can have four glasses during the service; or

--Grape juice for kids or those avoiding alcohol

--Matzah Tash, a stack of three matzo wrapped in a cloth, and an additional cloth alongside it

--A small pillow for each person to lean back on (optional, but comfy!)

Each person will need the following on their plate BEFORE the meal begins:

--One roasted or hard-boiled egg, already peeled

--A few sprigs of a green leafy herb, usually parsley

--Horseradish (a small spoonful per plate)

--Charoset, a sweet mixture of apples, nuts, wine, and honey (recipe follows)

--Matzah, usually ½ a sheet per person during the Seder (some people like more); you can set this on the side so it doesn’t get soggy

In the middle of the Seder meal, there is a full meal served. There are many different menus available for ideas and recipes online. Some of the most common or popular menu items are:

Charoset Recipe (from FoodNetwork.com)

6 cups peeled, cored, and grated or chopped apples

2 lemons, juiced (or 4 T lemon juice)

1 cup roughly chopped walnuts

1 cup raisins or golden raisins or dates

½ cup honey

1 t cinnamon

¼ cup sweet red wine (or grape juice)

Combine all ingredients together in a large bowl. It’s best to make it a day or two before. Store in the refrigerator until ready to serve.

***For a nut-free charoset, substitute ½ cup chopped prunes and ½ cup chopped dried cranberries for the walnuts.
